Etymology: Probably partly (i) < Anglo-Norman anourer, anurer, enourer, Old French enorer, Old French, Middle French anorer, variants of onourer, honorer, honourer honour v., and partly (ii) an alteration of adore v., with reanalysis of the initial vowel of the α. forms at that entry as a reduced form of an- prefix¹, by confusion of a- prefix⁵ with a- prefix³; perhaps compare Anglo-Norman anurer to worship, honour (13th cent.), which may show similar reanalysis of aurer adore v. in Anglo-Norman, may be a variant of honorer honour v.
