Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Brahui. Partly a borrowing from Sindhi. Etymons: Persian Brāhūī, Brahui Brāhūī; Sindhi Brohī.
Etymology: In α. forms < (i) Persian Brāhūī, and its etymon (ii) Brahui Brāhūī, Birāhūī, self-designation. In β. forms (iii) via Sindhi Brohī.With the form Brahoui compare French Brahoui, noun denoting the people (1824 or earlier), noun denoting the language (1856 or earlier), and adjective (mid 19th cent. or earlier). Brahui is a Dravidian language.
