Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French femme.
Etymology: < French femme woman, wife (pronounced /fam/: see feme n.). In the form fem and with the pronunciation /fɛm/ probably remodelled after fem- (in feminine adj.); compare fem sem n. Compare earlier feme n.
Chiefly colloquial.
A. n.
1. A woman; a wife; spec. (chiefly North American, esp. in the entertainment industry and in journalistic use) a young woman, a girl. Cf. sense B. 1 and feme n.Also in many compounds and phrases deriving from French: see cherchez la femme phr., femme du monde n., femme fatale n., etc.In later journalistic use frequently in alliterative phrases, perhaps after femme fatale.
