Forms: Middle English femenyte, Middle English femynete, Middle English–1500s femynyte, 1500s feminytee, 1500s femynitie, 1500s–1600s feminitie, 1600s– feminity, 1800s femenitye; also Scottish pre-1700 faminitie, pre-1700 feminite, pre-1700 feminitie, pre-1700 femynite.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French feminité.
Etymology: < Middle French, French feminité qualities considered proper to a woman (1265 in Old French) < classical Latin fēmina woman (see female n.) + Old French -ité -ity suffix. Compare femininity n. Now largely superseded by femininity, and in some later examples perhaps a typographical error for this word.
