Etymology: < post-classical Latin meliorat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of meliorare to make better (early 3rd cent.), to become better (4th cent.) < classical Latin meliōr- , melior better, cognate with multus (see multi- comb. form). Compare earlier melioration n., and later ameliorate v.
