Etymology: < Arabic FTḤ (read as fataḥ), acronym < the initial letters of arakat al-taḥrīr al-Filasṭīn, lit. ‘movement for the liberation of Palestine’, with reversal of the order of the constituent letters, punningly after fatḥ victory (which is often mentioned in the Qur’an with reference to the victory of the faithful over the ‘unbelievers’), and also in order to avoid association with ḥatf death.

A Palestinian political organization, founded in Cairo in 1957 by Yasir Arafat (1929–2004) and fellow Palestinians, which defined its goal as the liberation of Palestine by armed struggle; latterly, the dominant faction of the P.L.O., of which Arafat became Chairman in 1969.
