单词 ptolemaic
释义

Ptolemaicadj.1n.

Brit. /ˌtɒləˈmeɪɪk/, U.S. /ˌtɑləˈmeɪɪk/
Forms: 1600s Ptolemaique, 1600s Ptolomaique, 1600s–1700s Ptolemaick, 1600s–1700s Ptolomaick, 1600s– Ptolemaic, 1700s– Ptolomaic.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Ptolemaicus, Ptolomaicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Ptolemaicus (1540 as adjective, 1660 as noun; also Ptolomaicus (1532 as adjective)) < Hellenistic Greek Πτολεμαῖος (post-classical Latin Ptolemaeus (5th cent.)), the name of the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy ( a.d. c90–168) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare earlier Ptolemean adj.2, Ptolemaical adj.
Astronomy.
A. adj.1
Of or relating to the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus, a.d. c90–168); spec. designating or relating to his theory of solar, lunar, and planetary motion as described in the Almagest and other writings, in which the sun, moon, and planets were held to revolve around a stationary earth, in orbits described by combinations of eccentric, epicyclic, and equant circles (cf. Copernican adj.). Chiefly historical. In some contexts the term refers to an arrangement in which the sun, moon, and planets were supposedly carried on a system of nested, non-intersecting spheres.Although heliocentric models of planetary motion had been proposed before Ptolemy, his geocentric model was so accurate in predicting the positions of the planets that it superseded them, and was generally accepted until the 17th cent. Copernicus (1543) proposed a heliocentric model; this came to be widely adopted in the course of the 17th cent., helped especially by the telescopic discoveries of Galileo, Kepler's laws of planetary motion, and Newton's explanation of the latter in terms of his universal theory of gravitation.
