释义 | Ptolemaicadj.1n. Astronomy. A. adj.1 Of or relating to the Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy (Claudius Ptolemaeus, a.d. c90–168); spec. designating or relating to his theory of solar, lunar, and planetary motion as described in the Almagest and other writings, in which the sun, moon, and planets were held to revolve around a stationary earth, in orbits described by combinations of eccentric, epicyclic, and equant circles (cf. Copernican adj.). Chiefly historical. In some contexts the term refers to an arrangement in which the sun, moon, and planets were supposedly carried on a system of nested, non-intersecting spheres.Although heliocentric models of planetary motion had been proposed before Ptolemy, his geocentric model was so accurate in predicting the positions of the planets that it superseded them, and was generally accepted until the 17th cent. Copernicus (1543) proposed a heliocentric model; this came to be widely adopted in the course of the 17th cent., helped especially by the telescopic discoveries of Galileo, Kepler's laws of planetary motion, and Newton's explanation of the latter in terms of his universal theory of gravitation.
