Etymology: < medieval Latin faldistolium, < Old High German faldstuol lit. ‘a folding seat or campstool’, < faldan to fold + stuol seat, chair: see fold v.1 and stool n. Compare fauteuil n. The Old English fyldestól has been explained as from Latin or Romance (with umlaut of the vowel of the first syllable due to the euphonic i prefixed in Romanic to a syllable beginning with st-) but compare the gloss ‘volumina, fyldas’ in Zeitschrift f. Deutsches Alterthum, IX. 494.
1. Ecclesiastical. An armless chair used by bishops and other prelates when they do not occupy the throne or when officiating in any but their own church.
