Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin restringere.
Etymology: < classical Latin restringere to tie up, restrain, to restrict, confine, to repress, cramp, in post-classical Latin also to constipate (14th cent. in a British source) < re- re- prefix + stringere to tie, bind (see stringent adj.). Compare Spanish restringir (15th cent.), Portuguese restringir (14th cent.), Italian ristringere (12th cent.), and also the Romance forms cited at restrain v.1 Compare earlier restrain v.1 and slightly later restrict v. With sense 2 compare earlier restringitive adj., restringing adj., restringent adj.
