Etymology: Of obscure origin; quot. c1480 would suggest that it is < ail n.2 trouble, affliction + bourn n.1; but this may be popular etymology.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈeylebourn.

c1480 J. Warkworth Chron. 24 [mentions an intermittent stream near St. Albans, called Wemere (interpreted ‘woo watere’), the flowing of which was ‘a tokene of derthe, or of pestylence, or of grete batayle’; and adds:] Also there has ronne dyverse suche other wateres, that betokenethe lykewyse; one at Lavesham in Kent, and another byside Canturbury called Naylborne.
