单词 evenlong
释义

evenlongadj.prep.adv.

Forms: Old English efelang (perhaps transmission error), Old English efenlang, Old English emlang, Old English emnlange (as preposition), Middle English efferlong (probably transmission error), Middle English euenelonge, Middle English euenlong, Middle English ewnlang, 1600s euenlong, 1600s evenlong.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: even adv., long adj.1; -long suffix.
Etymology: Originally < even adv. + long adj.1; compare Middle Dutch evenlanc , Old High German ebanlang (Middle High German ebenlanc ), Old Icelandic jafnlangr , all in sense ‘equally long’. In later use (in Middle English) as preposition and adverb also < even adv. + -long suffix; compare evenlongs prep.In Old English (in the sole attestation in quot. OE at sense B.) the preposition is construed with the dative. The form in quot. OE at sense B. (with final -e probably indicating original plural agreement) suggests conversion from the adjective. In later use usually written as two words. Apparently re-formed in the 17th cent.
Obsolete.
