Any of various measuring devices; spec. †(a) an instrument for measuring angles (obsolete); †(b) an apparatus for measuring the distance between railway rails and detecting any difference in elevation between them (obsolete); (c) a form of hygrometer incorporating a thermometer and tables so that dew points, vapour pressures, etc., can be calculated for particular values of atmospheric temperature and humidity.
