Etymology: < poly- comb. form + -mery comb. form, after polymerous adj.1 Compare Hellenistic Greek πολυμέρεια the condition of consisting of many parts.In sense 2 after German Polymerie (A. Lang 1911, in Zeitschr. f. induktive Abstammungs- u. Vererbungslehre 5 113).

Johannsen (1913) suggests that..[this term] be retained..for the phenomenon in general.
