单词 even hands
释义

even handsadv.

Brit. /ˌiːvn ˈhandz/, U.S. /ˌiv(ə)n ˈhændz/, Scottish English /ˌivn ˈhan(d)z/
Forms:

α. late Middle English–1500s euen hand, 1500s even hande, 1600s even hand.

β. 1600s– even hands.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: even adj.1, hand n.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < even adj.1 + hand n., after on (also at, of) even hand (also hands) at even adj.1 and n.2 Phrases 5. Subsequently (in β. forms) re-formed with the second element in the plural, perhaps partly after adverbs in -s suffix1.
Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern) in later use. Now rare (chiefly in historical contexts).
On equal terms, on an equal footing (with a person); (also) in step, in line. Frequently in to be even hands with. Cf. on (also at, of) even hand (also hands) at even adj.1 and n.2 Phrases 5.
