Brit. /ˈɛtrɒɡ/, U.S. /ˈɛtrɑɡ/
Inflections: Plural etrogs, etrogim.
Forms: 1800s aethrog, 1800s– esrog, 1800s– ethrog, 1800s– etrog.

Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew (Mishnah) eṯrōg citron, citron tree < Persian tūrunj kind of citrus fruit (10th or 11th cent.), further etymology uncertain and disputed (perhaps related to nārang : see orange n.1). Compare post-classical Latin etrog (1726 or earlier). In the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures (Leviticus 23:40), the fruit used on Succoth is called pĕri ʿēṣ ḥadar, literally ‘fruit of the beautiful tree’ (whence post-classical Latin fructus arboris pulcherrimae (Vulgate) and the Revised Standard Version's rendering ‘fruit of goodly trees’; the King James Bible translates ‘boughs of goodly trees’). This fruit (of unknown identity) is traditionally identified with the etrog. In plural form etrogim after the Hebrew plural form.
A citron, the fruit of the tree Citrus medica (family Rutaceae), used ritually in the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles (Succoth).
