单词 ermelin
释义

ermelinn.

/ˈəːməlɪn/
Forms: Also 1500s–1600s armelin(e, ermilin, h)ermeline, (1600s armlin), 1500s ermly.
Etymology: The immediate source is uncertain: the word appears in most of the Romanic languages; Italian armellino, ermellino, Spanish armelina, French hermeline (Boiste), armeline (Cotgrave), medieval Latin armelīnus (in French documents of 13th cent.). The ulterior etymology shares in the uncertainty belonging to that of the synonymous ermine n. If the latter be of Germanic origin, the Romanic forms above cited must be regarded as < Middle High German hermelîn (modern German hermelin ), diminutive of harme < Old High German harmo (see ermine n.). If the alternative view be correct, the medieval Latin type armelīnus must be a diminutive or adjectival formation on armenius, and the Middle High German hermelîn an adoption < Romanic, though perhaps influenced by association with the native word.
Now archaic or poetic.
