embassadorn.Etymology: Variant of ambassador n. (although this is first attested slightly later; with the variation in the ending, compare discussion at that entry).Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French embassadeur (late 14th cent.; beginning of the 14th cent. in Old French as embassator ), Spanish embajador (a1417; end of the 14th cent. as †embaxador ), Portuguese embaixador (15th cent.), Italian †imbasciatore (a1533; a1342 as imbasciadore ; also †imbassatore (a1534), etc.), and also post-classical Latin embassator (1318 in a British source), imbassiator (14th cent. in a British source), embassiator , enbassiator (second half of the 15th cent. in British sources). With the β. forms compare im- prefix1, and also the β. forms at embassade n. and adv., β. forms at embassadry n., and β. forms at embassy n. The spelling embassador was very common in the 17th cent., but appears to have been considerably rarer from the 18th cent. onwards, although on usage in the mid 18th cent. compare the following comment by Johnson (1755): ‘Our authors write almost indiscriminately embassador or ambassador , embassage or ambassage ; yet there is scarce an example of ambassy , all concurring to write embassy ’. In U.S. usage, ambassador was apparently always much more frequent than embassador , although Webster (1828 and in later 19th-cent. editions) preferred the latter, by analogy with embassy n. The standardization on ambassador n. may be due to the influence of the standard modern French form ambassadeur.
