Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: amber adj., snail n.1
Etymology: < amber adj. + snail n.1Compare German Bernsteinschnecke (1776 denoting the yellow slug, 1820 or earlier denoting a snail of the genus Succinea). With sense 2 compare also scientific Latin Succinea , genus name (J. P. R. Draparnaud 1801, Tableau des mollusques terrestres et fluviatiles de la France), after earlier use as specific name (O. F. Müller 1774) < classical Latin succinum amber (see succinea n.) + -eus (see -eous suffix). Compare also German †agtsteinferbige Schnecke, lit. ‘amber-coloured snail’, Danish ravsnekken ‘amber snail’, and French ambrée (all 1774 or earlier, and mentioned by O. F. Müller).
1. The yellow slug, Limax flavus. Obsolete. rare.Some other 18th-century writers call it the amber slug.
