Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Cellobiose.
Etymology: < German Cellobiose (H. Skraup & J. König 1902, in Monatshefte für Chemie 22 1011) < Cello- (in Cellose cellose n.) + -biose , combining form indicating a disaccharide (see biose n.).
Biochemistry.
A disaccharide consisting of two glucose units, obtained by the partial hydrolysis of cellulose. Formerly also called cellose. Formula: C12H22O11. Cellobiose differs from maltose in having a β(1→4) glycosidic linkage between the glucose units.
