Origin: A borrowing from Xhosa. Etymon: Xhosa amaXhosa.
Etymology: < Xhosa amaXhosa < ama- , plural class prefix denoting people + -Xhosa , self-designation (see Xhosa n.). With use as noun compare earlier Xhosa n.; with use as adjective compare earlier Xhosa adj.The English forms amaXhosa (with a lower-case initial in the first element) reflects Xhosa orthography. In Xhosa orthography, xh represents an alveolar lateral click, which is typically rendered as /k/ by speakers of European languages. The Xhosa etymon is a plural form (singular umXhosa Xhosa person); occasional English uses as singular, and hence former plural forms with -s (compare quot 1809), are secondary developments.
