A shout or battle cry uttered by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War (1861–5). Also in extended use.Although the precise nature of the rebel yell is uncertain, its character was consistently regarded as quite distinct from the battle cries associated with the United States Army, which were variously described as ‘cheers’ or ‘hurrahs’.
