Etymology: < Swedish dy mire, ooze (H. von Post 1862, in K. Sven. Vetenskaps-Akad. Handl. 1), < Old Norse , perhaps < Germanic *dunhia , related to *dungia , the antecedent of Old English dung dung n.1 (see Falk and Torp); but the etymology of the Old Norse word is disputed.
A type of sediment rich in organic matter deposited in unproductive lakes.
