Etymology: < drum n.1 + major n.2, originally after Middle French tabourin maieur first or chief drummer of a body of troops (1548 in the passage translated in quot. 1589, or earlier; < tabourin drummer (a1447), specific sense development of tabourin drum (see taborin n.) + maieur major adj.). In sense 3 punning on drum n.3 1 and major adj. 2.
