Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu dam.
Etymology: < Urdu dam < Persian dam breath, air, blast (of heat), (of food) state of simmering or stewing < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit dham- to blow. Compare earlier dumpoked adj.In dum aloo after Hindi dam ālū ( < Urdu dam + Hindi ālū aloo n.; also as ālū dam).
