Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Doulton.
Etymology: < the names of John Doulton (1793–1873), English pottery manufacturer, and his son Henry Doulton (1820–97).In 1815 John Doulton set up a partnership for a pottery company with Martha Jones and her foreman John Watts. John Doulton's son Henry joined his company as an apprentice in 1835. In 1901 King Edward VII granted a Royal Warrant to the Burslem (Staffordshire) factory of the company; thereafter it became known as Royal Doulton.
