1868 H. Watts Dict. Chem. V. 994 Vanillin..was first recognised as a peculiar substance by Bley.., further examined by Gobley,..and afterwards by Stokkebye,..who designates it as vanillic acid.
1876 J. Harley Royle's Man. Materia Med. (ed. 6) 385 Vanillin..has, in fact, acid properties, and is therefore appropriately called vanillic acid.
1885 I. Remsen Introd. Study Compounds of Carbon (1888) 304 Vanillic acid..is formed by oxidation of vanillin, which is the corresponding aldehyde.
