Etymology: In α. forms < dog n.1 + fennel n.; in β. forms < the genitive of dog n.1 + fennel n.; so called on account of its bad smell, and fennel-like leaves; compare dog n.1 Compounds 3c. Compare hound-fennel n. at hound n.1 Compounds 2.
1. Originally: the stinking chamomile, Anthemis cotula (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)). Later also (chiefly North American): any of various similar plants of the same family having finely divided foliage resembling that of fennel, esp. any of the genus Eupatorium.
