Etymology: < paternoster n. + -er suffix1, after Anglo-Norman paternostrer and Old French, Middle French patenostrier (c1260; French patenôtrier ). In sense 2 < paternoster v. + -er suffix1. With sense 1 compare Middle High German pasternosterer.
