Etymology: < Hindi amcūr, ultimately < elements reflecting Sanskrit āmra mango (related to classical Latin amārus bitter: see amarous adj.) and cūrṇa powder (see chunam n.).The initial vowel of the Hindi word is short (reflecting a regular process); occasional English forms beginning with aam- may originate with English speakers recognizing that the first element is related to Hindi ām mango ( < Sanskrit āmra), which preserves the long vowel.

Dried unripe mango, typically in powdered form, commonly used in Indian cookery to add a tangy, sour taste to dishes.
