Etymology: In Caxton < French dispositif, -ive (13th cent. in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter), < Latin type *dispositīvus , < dispositus , past participle of dispōnĕre to dispose v.: see -ive suffix. In later use probably immediately from Latin or on Latin analogies.
