Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: dis- prefix, chain v.
Etymology: < dis- prefix + chain v., originally after Middle French deschainer (end of the 12th cent. in Old French as deschaener ; French déchaîner ). Compare earlier unchain v.
Now rare (chiefly poetic and literary).
transitive. To release from (or as if from) a chain; to unchain. Chiefly in past participle.
