Etymology: < the genitive of devil n. + advocate n., probably after post-classical Latin advocatus diaboli person who pleads in favour of an evil cause (13th cent.), (informally) person appointed by the Roman Catholic Church to argue the case against a proposed canonization, etc. (18th cent. in German contexts, or earlier; the official term was promotor fidei, lit. ‘promoter of the faith’).With use in religious contexts (see sense 2) compare also French avocat du diable (mid 18th cent.; early 19th cent. in more general uses).
1. Originally: a person who pleads in favour of an evil cause. Now usually: a person who expresses a contentious opinion or adopts a particular stance chiefly in order to provoke debate or test the strength of the opposing arguments. Frequently in to play devil's advocate.
