单词 signore
释义

signoren.

Brit. /siːnˈjɔːri/, /siːnˈjɔːreɪ/, U.S. /sinˈjɔri/
Forms: 1500s– signore, 1600s signiore.
Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian signore, signiore.
Etymology: < Italian signore, †signiore feudal lord, prince, sovereign (1219), God, Christ (c1224), patron, master (end of the 13th cent.), title of a man (c1353) < classical Latin senior senior adj. Compare earlier signor n. Compare also seigneur n., seignior n., señor n., senhor n. and the Romance nouns cited at these entries. In modern Italian, signor signor n. is normally used before the name or before another title of a man (e.g. in il signor Rossi ‘Mr Rossi’, signor presidente ‘Mr President’), while signore is normally used in the senses ‘gentleman’ and ‘the Lord, God’ and as a polite form of address to a man if his name or occupational title does not follow (i.e. ‘Sir’: Come sta, signore? ‘How are you, Sir?’). In pre-modern Italian usage, signore and signor appear to have been fully interchangeable variants.
= signor n.
