Etymology: < Italian signora woman (1562), title prefixed to the name of a married woman (although this is apparently first attested later: 1686; earlier in senses ‘mistress’ (a1503) and ‘wife’ (1534)), feminine form corresponding to signore signore n. Compare Old Occitan senhora, Catalan senyora (14th cent.), Spanish señora (a1207), Portuguese senhora (14th cent.; 13th cent. as †senner, †sennor), all in senses ‘lady’, ‘mistress’, and as title of a (usually married) woman.
