develv.

Forms: 1800s davel, 1800s–1900s devel.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: deave v., -le suffix 3.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably ultimately < the same base as deave v. + -le suffix 3. Slightly earlier currency is probably implied by devel n. Compare also earlier daver v. (which probably shows a parallel formation with -er suffix5).
Scottish and English regional (northern). Obsolete.
transitive. To strike or fell (a person) with a heavy blow; to beat or thrash. Also: to dash (a person) against something.
