Etymology: < post-classical Latin allusion-, allusio game (4th cent.), play on words (6th cent.) < classical Latin allūs- , past participial stem of allūdere allude v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French alucion , Middle French, French allusion (c1437 in sense ‘pretext’ in an apparently isolated attestation, 1574 in the now obsolete sense ‘play on words, pun’, 1593 in sense ‘implied, indirect, or passing reference to a person or thing’), Spanish alusión (1499), Italian allusione (1576). Compare slightly earlier alluding n.Sense 4 probably arose by confusion with illusion n. In to make allusion to perhaps after French faire allusion à (1615 or earlier).
