单词 demonstrance
释义

demonstrancen.

Brit. /dᵻˈmɒnstr(ə)ns/, U.S. /dᵻˈmɑnstr(ə)ns/
Forms: late Middle English–1500s demonstraunce, late Middle English– demonstrance.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Apparently also partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French demonstraunce ; remonstrance n.
Etymology: In senses of branch I. < Anglo-Norman demonstraunce, Anglo-Norman and Middle French demonstrance (French †demonstrance ) act of pointing something out (early 13th cent. in Old French), proof, sign (first half of the 14th cent. or earlier), exhibition or outward display of a quality or feeling (a1393; from early 12th cent. in forms without medial -n- : Anglo-Norman demoustrance , demustrance , demustraunce , Anglo-Norman and Old French demostrance ) < demonstrer (see demonstrate v.) + -ance -ance suffix. Compare Old Occitan demostransa . In senses of branch II. apparently an alteration of remonstrance n. by association with demonstrate v. (although this does not have a similar specific legal use), although compare Anglo-Norman demoustraunce , demonstrance statement of a grievance (first half of the 14th cent. or earlier). Compare also later demonstration n. 8.
Now rare.
I. Senses related to demonstration n.
1. A thing or circumstance which establishes the truth of a claim or theory; (a piece of) proof or evidence. Also: †a sign or indication of something; a symbol or token (obsolete). Cf. demonstration n. 2.
