单词 descendance
释义

descendancen.

Brit. /dᵻˈsɛnd(ə)ns/, U.S. /dəˈsɛnd(ə)ns/, /diˈsɛnd(ə)ns/
Forms:

α. 1600s discendence, 1500s–1600s 1800s descendence.

β. 1600s– descendance.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: descend v., -ence suffix.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < descend v. + -ence suffix, after descendent adj. (see β. forms at that entry); compare post-classical Latin descendentia slope, declivity (13th cent.), Spanish descendencia (c1500 or earlier), Italian †descendenza (now discendenza ). Subsequently (in β. forms) with remodelling of the suffix after descendant adj., α. forms at descendent adj., and formations in -ance suffix; compare also Middle French, French descendance succession (1285 in Old French), fact of descending from a certain person or family (1662). Compare earlier descendant adj., descent n. Compare also descendancy n.In sense 2 with plural agreement, perhaps arising as an error for descendants , plural (see descendant n. 1).
1. The fact of descending from a particular progenitor or ancestor, or of having a particular origin (= descent n. 2). Also occasionally: the transmission of a title, etc., to an heir (= descent n. 1a).
