Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the third syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, the word is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. platinoso-tungstate Brit. /platᵻˌnəʊsə(ʊ)ˈtʌŋsteɪt/, /platnˌəʊsə(ʊ)ˈtʌŋsteɪt/, U.S. /ˌplætnˌoʊsoʊˈtəŋˌsteɪt/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin platinoso-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin platinoso- (attributed to J. J. Berzelius: compare quot. 1858). Compare French platinoso- (1842 or earlier, in early use apparently only in translations of Berzelius). Compare: 1858 R. G. Mayne Expos. Lexicon Med. Sci. (1860) Platinoso-, a prefix employed by Berzelius in compound terms or epithets of double salts which result from the combination of a platinous salt with another metallic salt, as Platinoso-ammonicus, etc.
