Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: platinum n., -ous suffix.
Etymology: < platinum n. + -ous suffix, after post-classical Latin platinosus (in J. J. Berzelius 1813, in Jrnl. f. Chemie u. Physik 7 57). Compare French platineux (1842 in oxyde platineux ; probably after Berzelius's post-classical Latin oxydum platinosum (1813: see above). Compare also earlier platinic adj.
Chemistry.
Of or containing platinum, esp. in the divalent state. Cf. platinic adj.
