Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pteropoda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pteropoda, plural noun (1818 or earlier; 1806 or earlier as adjective in mollusca pteropoda , plural) < French ptéropodes , plural noun (Cuvier 1804, in Ann. du Muséum d'Hist. Nat. 4 232), plural of ptéropode (in the same source) < ptéro- ptero- comb. form + -pode -pod comb. form, perhaps after Hellenistic Greek πτερόπους wing-footed (see Pteropus n.). Compare pteropod n.
Zoology. Now historical.
A former class or order of pelagic opisthobranch molluscs comprising the pteropods (sea butterflies). With plural agreement (also pteropoda): the members of this class collectively.The pteropoda are now divided among the orders Thecosomata and Gymnosomata.
