Etymology: < scientific Latin Pteropus ( J. C. P. Erxleben Systema regni animalis (1777) 130) < Hellenistic Greek πτερόπους wing-footed < ancient Greek πτερο- ptero- comb. form + -πους (see -pod comb. form).With the plural pteropi compare discussion at octopus n.
Zoology.
A genus of large fruit-eating bats comprising most of the flying foxes; a bat of this genus, a flying fox.
