Etymology: < French †ambonoclaste person who advocates the removal of ambos from churches ( J.-B. Thiers Dissertation sur les jubés (1688), the source referred to in quot. 1841) < ambon ambon n. + -o- -o- connective + -claste -clast comb. form, after iconoclaste iconoclast n.Pugin's application of the term to a person who advocates the removal of rood screens, rather than of ambos, from churches (see quot. 1841) probably originates in the fact that older churches sometimes had two ambos placed on either side of the chancel arch, which was also the location of the rood screen.
