Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ambisinister , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin ambisinister doubly left-handed (4th or 5th cent.; from late 12th cent. in British sources; < classical Latin ambi- ambi- prefix + sinister left: see sinister adj.) + -ous suffix, after ambidextrous adj. Compare earlier ambilevous adj., and also earlier ambidexter adj.
Not able to use the right and left hands equally well; lacking dexterity, clumsy. Also occasionally: as skilled with the left hand as with the right; ambidextrous.In quot. 1863 figurative, with allusion to the custom of left-handed marriage; see left-handed adj. 2f.
