单词 maggle
释义

magglev.

Brit. /ˈmaɡ(ə)l/, U.S. /ˈmæɡ(ə)l/, Scottish English /ˈmaɡ(ə)l/
Forms: late Middle English maggle, late Middle English magle, late Middle English meggle; Scottish pre-1700 magell, pre-1700 maggil, pre-1700 maggill, pre-1700 maggle, pre-1700 magil, pre-1700 magill, pre-1700 magyll, pre-1700 maigle, pre-1700 meagle, pre-1700 1700s magle; also Irish English (northern) 1900s– maigell.
Origin: Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: mangle v.1
Etymology: Perhaps a variant of mangle v.1 (see below), and perhaps also influenced by Anglo-Norman demagler, demangler to lacerate, maim, mutilate (late 13th cent. or earlier). Compare mag v.1 and magged adj.The form of the word, and its predominantly northern and Scots usage, suggest that it could stand in a relationship with mangle v.1 similar to that which exists between tagle v. and tangle v.1 However, contrary to the relationship between those words suggested s.vv., the well-established Anglo-Norman origin of mangle precludes its being in origin a phonetic variant of maggle. A connection with Old French maigle (12th cent.; in Middle French also magle, megle) a vine-dresser's mattock (probably ultimately < ancient Greek μάκελλα mattock, pick), has also been suggested, and this could perhaps be the etymon of the Anglo-Norman verb (although the noun appears not to be attested in Anglo-Norman). (However, for a suggestion of a Celtic origin for the English word (compare Welsh maglu to mar, snare, defile (13th cent.)) see A. Breeze in ANQ 11 ii. (1998) 12-13.) Compare the verb maggle attested in sense ‘to worry, tease; to tire out, exhaust’ recorded from Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, and Oxfordshire in Eng. Dial. Dict.
Chiefly Scottish. Now rare.
transitive. To maul, maim, lacerate, cut up; to disorder; to botch, confuse.
