Etymology: < (i) Middle French defectuosité defect, flaw (a1440; French défectuosité ), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin defectuositas vice, defect (15th cent.; earlier in sense ‘poverty’ (14th cent.)) < defectuosus defectuous adj. + classical Latin -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Middle French deffectueusité (a1494). Compare earlier defectuous adj.
