Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin magisterium.
Etymology: < classical Latin magisterium the office of a master, in post-classical Latin also denoting the philosopher's stone < magister master n.1 + -ium -y suffix4. Compare Middle French, French magistère (c1200 in Old French in sense 3 in form magisteire ; 1611 in sense 5a, late 17th cent. in sense 5b; 1696 in sense 1b).
