Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Alexiani.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Alexiani, plural (1606 or earlier) < the name of St. Alexius (also Alexis ), the congregation's probably legendary patron saint (see below) + -ani -an suffix. Compare French Alexien , noun (1634 or earlier). Compare Cellite n.St Alexius was formerly believed to have lived in the late fourth and early fifth centuries a.d. and to have died c417, but he probably never existed, his legend being a conflation of several other saints' lives. He became popular in the Middle Ages because his life was included in the Golden Legend.

Chiefly in plural. A member of a Roman Catholic lay congregation having St Alexius as its patron, which was founded in Flanders in the 14th cent. and devotes itself to caring for the sick. Also known as Cellites: cf. Cellite n.
