Etymology: < Latin Cyclōps, -ōpem, < Greek Κύκλωψ lit. ‘round-eyed’, < κύκλος circle + -ὤψ eye. In Italian Ciclope, Spanish Ciclope, Portuguese Ciclope, French Cyclope, whence English Cyclop.
1. One of a race of one-eyed giants in ancient Greek mythology, who forged thunderbolts for Zeus. Hence often used allusively.
