Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: gammer n., stang n.¹

Etymology: Probably originally < gammer n. (although this is first attested slightly later) + stang n.¹ In later use, especially when denoting a man, perhaps reanalysed as being related to either gomerel n. or gangrel n.; such association is probably reflected also by the form gammerstel.

Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern).
